CHESS® Resources

CHESS® Reports:

The built-in analytics of CHESS® facilitate the creation of dashboards, summaries and maps to share with communities to increase understanding of their built environment, brainstorm solutions and advocate for promoting healthfulness. Maps illustrate the areas that were scanned while graphs and charts summarize the various metrics associated with healthy eating, physical activity spaces, and other measures of community health. These data increase the community’s awareness of their health environment and drive community planning and policy development.

CHESS® Impacts:

BRONX - Eagle academy

MATRIX worked with 100 Black Men and Eagle Academy, an all male charter school based in the Bronx, to train a cohort of high-school students on CHESS®. The students received training in the classroom on social determinants of health, the built environment and chronic disease prevention followed by walking streets in the Bronx with adult mentors. The video clip shows reflections from their recent experience having just completed the CHESS®walk.

brooklyn - El Puente academy for peace and justice

El Puente is a high school in Brooklyn where a cohort of students went through CHESS® training in the classroom on social determinants of health, the built environment and chronic disease prevention. Over a few weekends they went out and did the CHESS® walk mapping out several zipcodes in Brooklyn. Students were asked to reflect on what they learned and express themselves - as observed in this remarkable video.

Boscombe, uk - ASPIRE project

As part of MATRIX’s partnership with C3 Collaborating for Health (www.c3health.org) CHESS® has been implemented in 7 communities as part of the ASPIRE Project, an EU funded initiative that tackles obesity and unemployment. The animated video illustrates the CHESS® process from project development to implementation.
